Closer Than You Think

Hearing God's voice in your everyday life

You've prayed. You've read your Bible. You know the language of church. But underneath it all is a question you've never quite said out loud.

"Can I really hear God, or is that for other people?"

What it's about

You were never meant to sit on the sidelines of your own faith.

For most of my life I believed two things about myself that I would never have said out loud. I believed I had been rejected. And I believed I was too ordinary for God to use. Beliefs like that shape how you listen for Him.

Closer Than You Think is the book I wish I'd been handed. It draws on seventeen years in ministry and my Hearing God's Voice course. It names what blocks His voice (the wounds, the wrong beliefs, the noise) and then shows you how to hear Him again: through Scripture, your own thoughts, worship, dreams and visions, and the everyday moments you'd never call spiritual.

This isn't another to-do list for your quiet time.

It takes the pressure off.

Hearing God isn't a skill you master or a muscle you build. It comes from abiding, not achieving.

Every chapter ends with something simple to try. It's not homework, and there's no test you can fail. Each one is just a doorway to walk through.

CHAPTER TWO

Who You Are Before You Hear a Word

Let me name three of the most common identities the church carries. They're not new. The Bible names them for us. And I think you'll recognise yourself in at least one, because most of us live in some mix of all three.

The first is the slave. The slave believes they're here to serve God, and that's the whole relationship. There's a job to do. There are commands to keep. You may believe in grace and live like a slave. Most of us do. The slave hears every word as another item on the list. Pray more. Read more. Do better. Even when God speaks pure affection over a slave, the slave translates it into another assignment.

The second is the orphan. The orphan believes they have to look after themselves, because nobody else really will. Other people have testimonies of God showing up. The orphan watches those people from a slight distance, claps for them, and then goes home and figures out their own life on their own steam. The orphan is too busy bracing.

The third is the afterthought. The afterthought doesn't doubt that God speaks. They just doubt that He'd bother speaking to them. They expect to overhear the conversation, maybe, in church, or through someone else's prayer life. They don't expect a word with their name on it.

I've worn all three. At different points in my life I've been a striving slave, a self-protecting orphan, and a quiet afterthought all in the same week.

* * *

You are not a slave. You are a child. You are not an orphan. You are an heir. You are not an afterthought. You are an heir of God and co-heir with Christ.

The veil is torn. The door is open. The Father is on the other side, and He has a chair pulled up for you.

Who it's for

I wrote this for you if…

  • you love God but you're mostly going through the motions
  • you've been a Christian for years, you know your Bible, and you're hungry for real connection but don't know where to start
  • you nod along when someone says "and the Lord said to me…", but quietly wonder
  • you're newer in your faith and your foundation still feels a bit shaky
  • you've been hurt by church or by people, and you've been keeping your distance
  • you've written yourself off as "not the spiritual type"

And if that's someone you love rather than you, early readers have told me this is the book they want to buy for their friends and family.

From the first readers

What readers have said

The manuscript was sent to a group of readers for editorial feedback. Here's some of what they said.

"I started reading it this morning thinking I would carry on later, but I just couldn't stop. Informative, inspiring, uplifting… overflowing with love, faith and hope."

"It has taken such a load off my shoulders that I didn't even know was there."

"It sounded like I know you, like a friend talking. Warm and personal. Real. Relatable. Do-able."

"I have heard this before, but it was like I was hearing it for the first time."

"Hearing from God is for everyone, not just a select few or 'highly gifted'. Explained in a true, simple way, not complex."

Every one of those readers said they'd recommend it to a friend without hesitation.
